Lesson 5

videomaking

What would you record of your life today to share with the world and your future self?

In this lesson, you will be asked to capture video footage using your mobile device: 20 shots x 10-60 seconds each from a single setting.

For example, a wedding, waking up in the morning, going to the bush, walking to school, gaming, any outdoor activity or even hanging out with friends. Anything that is PG-13 and respectful of others is acceptable—anything.

Also, record a clip of your voice (no duration limit), and tell the world what's on your mind.

For inspiration, please click on "Life in a Day 2020" trailer.

CAMERASHOTS

Cinema is a language. It can say things—feelings, abstract ideas and things that I find difficult to express with words.

David Lynch

Camera ShotS

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CAMERA SHOTS

Camera shots are an essential aspect of video productions because they emphasize specific emotions, ideas and movement of a scene.

Camera ANGLES

ADJUSTING CAMERA HEIGHT FOR IMPACT

The position of the camera in relation to the subjects affects the way the viewer perceives the scene.

Camera Movement

a filmmaking technique that causes a change in frame or perspective through the movement of the camera.

Camera movement allows cinematographers to shift the audience's view without cutting. It can create a psychological and emotional effect on the audience, and used to make a film more immersive and engaging.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

1

RECORD 20 SHOTS & 1 AUDIO CLIP USING A MOBILE DEVICE OR GoPro IN LANDSCAPE MODE.

LANDSCAPE 16:9                       PORTRAIT

2

RECORD ONE EVENT (SCENE) USING 20 DIFFERENT CAMERA SHOTS

EACH SHOT MUST BE BETWEEN 10 to 60 seconds

An event can be a celebration, lazying in your room, walking to school, working, sports, hunting, bush life, a wedding, funeral, gaming, hanging with friends or your loved one, etc. Shots don't have to have you in the frame, but people should be included as part of the event (scene).

NOTE: Don't forget to include insert shots amongst your 20

3

RECORD YOUR VOICE DESCRIBING THE SCENE OR YOUR STATE OF MIND 10 TO 60 SECONDS.

YOU MAY APPEAR IN THE SHOT OR NOT, ENTIRELY UP TO YOU. BUT, TALKING TO A CAMERA IS ALWAYS VERY POWERFUL WHEN WANTING TO GET AN AUDIENCE TO LISTEN TO YOUR COMMENTARY.

Recommendation: write in your journal what you will say during the recording.

VOICEOVERTEXT

Walking the land on the first day of Spring is an annual ritual and a renewal of my spirit each year since inhabiting The Cree Nation of Chisasibi.

Walking Eeyou Itschee, the People's Land, is a privilege that I  now walk in my long-style Cree snowshoes as did indigenous ancestors for thousands of years before.

This pair of snowshoes was Jimmy Sam's first set he ever made. He offered them to me along with a pair of moccasins that were handcrafted by his mother long ago. Receiving such a generous gifts warms the heart.

As I walk, I feel Cree spirits guiding my every step. There is a sense of those who walked before, now walk with me.
